You want to sell something to trucking companies. But where do you find them?

Imagine you've developed a product or service for trucking companies. Maybe it's fleet management software, insurance services, equipment, or something else. You know there are thousands of potential customers across the United States, but how do you find the ones most likely to need what you're selling?

You could spend weeks searching Google, collecting company names, and building spreadsheets. But you still wouldn't know much about these businesses. How many trucks do they operate? Where are they located? Are they registered as active? Which companies are large enough to be worth approaching? And how big is your potential market in the first place?

The good news is that the U.S. government already collects much of this information. The bad news is that it's scattered across different databases, with inconsistent formats and records that aren't always up to date. Putting everything together can become a project of its own.

That's where Persistfolio's FMCSA National Motor Carrier Dataset comes in. We've brought together approximately 4.5 million motor carrier records, along with operating authority and insurance filing information, into one organized dataset. You can explore carriers by location, fleet size, and other characteristics without having to assemble all those government files yourself.

Maybe you'll use it to identify potential customers, decide which states to expand into, research the trucking industry, or develop a service of your own. It's not a ready-made list of qualified leads, and some information needs to be checked against current FMCSA records before you rely on it. But it gives you something valuable: a much clearer picture of the market you're trying to reach.

Because before you can sell to trucking companies, you need to know who they are and where to find them.

Who is this dataset for?

  • Freight brokers, shippers and carrier-onboarding teams who screen carriers by authority, status, fleet size and insurance filings
  • Sales and market-intelligence teams building lists of motor carriers by state, fleet size, cargo and operation type
  • Analysts and researchers who need the full FMCSA carrier universe in one joined, documented snapshot

What can you do with it?

Screen carriers before onboarding

Filter authority_dockets by status and carriers by status_code, power_units and mcs150_age_days; read verify_live_reasons for carriers whose data is old or where official sources disagree, and verify those on the FMCSA portal.

Build a carrier list by state, fleet and cargo

Select active carriers in carriers_active, filter by physical_state, power_units and cargo columns, and keep the source and as-of columns so every row can be checked.

Study the carrier population

Join carriers to authority_dockets, insurance_filings and insurance_history on usdot_number to analyse authority, filings and fleet by state or operation type.

How to use the files

  1. Download the free sample and read README, LIMITATIONS and the data dictionary to learn the tables, source dates and flags.
  2. Read the limitations before relying on any record: insurance filings are not verified coverage and some authority data is frozen at 2026-05-14.
  3. Load the Parquet or CSV files into DuckDB, pandas or your database; start from carriers_active or carriers_all and join the child tables on usdot_number.
Example: active carriers in Texas with 10 or more power units

In carriers_active filter physical_state = TX and power_units >= 10, then join authority_dockets on usdot_number and keep rows where verify_live_reasons is empty; verify any flagged carrier on the FMCSA portal.

Try real records before buying

Which edition and license should you buy?

One fixed edition, built from FMCSA Census data of 2026-10-12, Motus data of 2026-10-12 and legacy tables frozen at 2026-05-14. Both tiers receive the identical complete dataset (all carriers and an active-only extract, CSV and Parquet). The Individual / Academic tier is for one named person’s own academic, research, journalistic or professional-analysis work; the Business / Commercial tier is for internal use within one legal entity, including vetting and prospecting. No updates are promised.

Why buy this instead of using free source data?

The FMCSA data is free but split across many datasets with different layouts, legacy and current systems and inconsistent amounts. This edition joins them once, documents every merge rule and source date, flags records that need live verification, and ships ready-to-load files with checksums.

What happens after payment?

After secure checkout you receive a private download link for one ZIP (35 files, about 1.37 GB) with CSV and Parquet tables, documentation, QA reports, a sample and checksums. You must accept the license at checkout.

carriers (all statuses)

What You Get

  • Carriers (all 4,516,324 and an active-only extract), authority dockets, insurance filings and insurance history, each as gzip CSV and Parquet
  • Data dictionary, methodology, limitations, quality report, adjudication record, date-anomaly list, checksums and manifest
  • A free sample of 1,000 active carriers with their child rows
  • Read the limitations first: insurance filings are not verified coverage; part of the authority data is frozen at 2026-05-14

What This Does Not Contain

  • No dedicated e-mail address column (authority status-reason text can contain e-mail-shaped strings), fax, cell, officers, mailing addresses, BOC-3 agents, DUNS, policy numbers, safety-measurement percentiles, per-inspection or per-incident detail, or individual driver records (aggregate driver counts are included).

What the file does that the raw FMCSA tables do not

  • Joins Census, Motus and frozen legacy tables on USDOT number and docket under documented rules, with source and as-of columns on every table
  • Flags records that need live verification (old registration, frozen legacy data, implausible dates, official sources that disagree)
  • Separates insurance filing evidence from verified coverage and says plainly what bulk data cannot show
  • Ships an active-only extract, Parquet and CSV, a data dictionary and checksums

Methodology & QA

Census, Motus and frozen legacy tables are pulled from data.transportation.gov, joined on USDOT number and docket under documented rules (Motus preferred over legacy; Census as the primary phone source), normalised and flagged. Two independent builds are byte-identical and an independent fidelity check compared 25,996 cells with no mismatch.

Known Limitations

  • Insurance filings are reported filing evidence as of the source date, not verified coverage; scheduled cancellations are not detectable in bulk and a missing cancellation date means unknown.
  • Legacy authority and insurance tables were last refreshed by FMCSA on 2026-05-14; for dockets without a Motus record this edition can be five months out of date.
  • Two official Motus tables disagree about the authority status of 5,401 of 160,566 checked authority rows; such carriers are flagged for live verification. A flag does not show which source is right.
  • Census self-reported fields (fleet, drivers, mileage, phones, addresses) are as registered by the carrier and can be stale; check mcs150_date.
  • Differences between this edition and FMCSA SAFER snapshots taken on other dates were observed in review and could not all be explained; verify on the FMCSA portal before relying on a record.
  • E-mail-shaped text remains unmasked in authority_dockets.last_status_change_reason (3,956 values, 3,578 carriers), because it is source-provided status-reason text; three e-mail strings in other free-text fields are masked.
  • No blind independent audit has passed; no legal opinion has been obtained.

FAQ

Is this verified or certified?

No. It is QA-complete: automated checks pass, two builds are identical and an independent fidelity check found no mismatch. No blind independent audit has passed and no legal opinion has been obtained. An external review of 39 records found no confirmed material error but was not blind and did not verify every field.

Does it show current insurance coverage?

No. Insurance records are filings reported to FMCSA as of the source date. Verify coverage on the FMCSA portal before onboarding, underwriting or tendering.

How current is it?

Census and Motus data are as of 2026-10-12. Legacy authority and insurance tables were frozen by FMCSA on 2026-05-14, so for dockets without a Motus record the data can be about five months old.

What is the difference between the two licenses?

Both receive the identical complete dataset. Individual / Academic (US$149) is for one named person’s own academic, research, journalistic or professional-analysis work. Business / Commercial (US$399) is for internal use within one legal entity, including carrier vetting and sales prospecting. Neither allows redistribution.

Can I contact the carriers?

The phone numbers and addresses are public registry fields, but you are responsible for lawful outreach (telemarketing, do-not-call, anti-spam and privacy laws). Carriers that are individuals have street, ZIP and phone withheld.

Do I get updates?

No. This is a fixed, dated edition. A later edition would be a separate product.
